HSE - Working at Height - June 2008 HSE warns companies to ensure they have safe systems in place for working at height after a Rhondda carpenter fell 5 metres and was left with serious injuries that may well have ended his career. HSE warns of the dangers of working at height after Birmingham worker is injured in Solihull. HSE - Asbestos - May 2008 HSE reminds the building trade that failure to carry out checks and surveys for asbestos in property refurbishments is unacceptable. This warning follows the successful prosecution by HSE of a building surveyor who failed to meet his legal duties to carry out an asbestos survey, undertaking demolition work that exposed people to asbestos. HSE - Excavations - May 2008 Construction company fined £18k following incident where worker was seriously injured after falling into in unsafe excavation. HSE - Fall through fragile asbestos cement roof leads to fines for two contractors Two contractors have been ordered to pay over £60k in fines and costs after workers fell through a fragile asbestos cement roof and suffered multiple fractures and spinal injuries. Falls through fragile roofs and rooflights account for around 25% of all fall related deaths in construction. Falls from ladders and working platforms account for a further 50% of such deaths. From the 6th April 2008 where such deaths occur owners and occupiers of business premises may find themselves subject to a police investigation under the Corporate Manslaughter Act 2007. All parties therefore need to assess carefully any work on or near fragile roofs and implement the precautions required.
